Malaysian Semiconductor IC Design Park, UiTM Delegation Visits School of Microelectronics SUSTech to Explore Collaboration

March 24, 2025 – A delegation from the Malaysia Semiconductor Integrated Circuit Design Park, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), and the Malaysia Advanced Semiconductor Academy visited the School of Microelectronics at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). The two sides held in-depth discussions on semiconductor talent cultivation, academic collaboration, and international exchange. The meeting was attended by Professor Wei Hong, Director of SUSTech’s Office of International Cooperation; Yu Zhi, Deputy Director of the International Student Office; Zhu Bao, Deputy Director of the Graduate Admissions Office; and from the School of Microelectronics: Dean Cheng Xin, Associate Dean Yu Hao, Associate Dean Pan Quan, and Professor Zhou Shengming. The meeting was chaired by Dean Cheng Xin.

Prior to the meeting, Associate Dean Pan Quan led the delegation on a tour of the School’s "Chip Tech" Exhibition Hall and the MOE Engineering Research Center for Future Communication Integrated Circuits. The exhibition hall showcased the latest semiconductor technologies and research achievements, while the laboratory demonstrated the School’s cutting-edge research and innovation capabilities in microelectronics. The delegation spoke highly of the School’s technical strength and research standards.

During the meeting, Dean Cheng Xin extended a warm welcome to the Malaysian delegation and introduced the fundamentals of SUSTech and the School of Microelectronics. He noted that SUSTech is committed to cultivating high-end talent with international vision and innovation, and that the School has achieved remarkable results in the semiconductor field. He expressed hope for deeper collaboration to jointly advance the semiconductor industry.

Mr. Yong KaiPing, CEO of the Information Technology and Digital Economy Agency at the Malaysia Semiconductor Integrated Circuit Design Park, noted in his address that the Malaysian government places great emphasis on the development of the semiconductor industry. As a key educational institution in the semiconductor field, UiTM is dedicated to training semiconductor talent. He hoped that this visit would strengthen cooperation with SUSTech to jointly enhance the quality of education and research in semiconductors.

Senior Lecturer Rafidah Binti Rosman from UiTM emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation. She stated that UiTM is very eager to engage in in-depth collaboration with SUSTech to jointly cultivate high-end semiconductor talent and supply the regional semiconductor industry with versatile professionals possessing global perspectives. She specifically mentioned potential cooperation in short-term lecturer exchanges, student exchange programs, online academic sharing, and joint graduate student supervision.

During the discussion, both sides explored the possibility of UiTM students pursuing master's and doctoral degrees at SUSTech to foster more internationally competitive semiconductor talent. They agreed that joint student training, faculty development, collaborative research, academic conferences, and project cooperation could promote knowledge sharing and academic progress in the semiconductor field between the two institutions.

Professor Wei Hong, Director of SUSTech’s Office of International Cooperation, stated that through such talent exchanges, SUSTech will further expand its international cooperation network. He noted that the collaboration between the School of Microelectronics and Malaysian partners will inject new momentum into technological innovation and talent cultivation in the semiconductor sector, and that the Office will move forward with the cooperation promptly.

Ms. Low Angel, representing the Malaysia Advanced Semiconductor Academy, highlighted its IC Park innovation ecosystem model. The Academy has built a global collaboration platform offering office space, talent cultivation, and state-of-the-art equipment as one-stop services for semiconductor companies. It has also selected ten international and local flagship companies to join its accelerator program, accelerating technology transfer and industry empowerment. She expressed sincere hope for deepening cross-border cooperation with SUSTech to co-create a new blueprint for the semiconductor industry.

This exchange marks a key step in the School of Microelectronics’ collaboration with international semiconductor education institutions. It not only strengthened the friendship between SUSTech and the Malaysian Semiconductor IC Design Park and UiTM but also laid a solid foundation for future cooperation in the semiconductor field. Both sides will continue to work together to advance the semiconductor industry and contribute wisdom and strength to society.
