On August 17, the First International Competition of Autonomous Walking Intelligent Robots (Running-Robot) 2019 sponsored by Beijing Association for Science and Technology and co-hosted by Beijing Institute of Electronics Association and the Institute of Microelectronics, Tsinghua University, kicked off at Beijing Science Center. This two-day event with the theme “Intelligent for better life” attracted 33 teams from universities at home and abroad, including Germany, UK, South Korea, Cote d’Ivoire, and Pakistan. Representatives from more than 20 countries and regions also attended the competition and exchanged views.

The School of Microelectronics, SUSTech sent three teams to the competition, with a total of 14 contestants. Among them, the "Super-hot Liangpi Team" (tutors: Professor Yu Hao and Associate Professor An Fengwei) composed of Deng Guihang, Yang Yuan, Gao Xuheng, Meng Lingxiao and Zhang Shibo won the global third prize, and the other two teams also won the excellence award.

The core of this competition is to see “who can tame smarter robots”. There are modes of competition, including standard competition, free competition and performance competition. Both the standard competition and free competition will be ranked based on the time it takes to cross a specified number of obstacles on a specified track. Each robot is controlled by a chip carrying powerful algorithms. According to the actual situation of the track, the robot will use its "brain" (not controlled manually) to analyze and determine the way to cross obstacles, and the one who crosses all the obstacles in the shortest time wins. The performance competition focuses on the combination of AI and robots, and does not limit the types of robots and performance content.

Competition Highlights

Different from other universities that sent out senior students, the three teams of our school are all led by sophomores. Although the students encountered great challenges due to their incomplete professional knowledge and lack of competition experience, they continued the struggle without fear of hardship, bravely faced the difficulties, and worked hard to prepare throughout vacation time, which has finally led to their great achievements in the competition.

Recalling the competition, the students thanked the School for giving them the opportunity to challenge themselves. Chen Xinhao said: No matter what difficulties you encounter, you should not give up. Juts go all out and do it. At the end of the day, you will find that you are not so far behind. You can catch up to others by doing a little more. However, if you give up early because you feel like there’s no hope, you will find that you are far behind and you won’t learn much in the competition. Wang Yuhang also said that although the final result was not the best, it was still a very unforgettable experience for them. Deng Guihang said that participating in such a high-level competition for the first time as sophomores, they were a bit uneasy in the beginning, but under the encouragement of Mr. Yu Hao, the teammates overcame difficulties and finally won the global third prize, and they gained the knowledge and courage to persevere. Thanks to the school and to the teammates!
